Me camping with the women after being woken up in the middle of the night by a dingo eating from the black pot to the left of the photo. After being flooded in a community, I drove two hours through flooded river and 100km of unsealed roads, having never driven off road before. This is Risking on Purpose at its best; I wouldn't have it any other way.

Having just spent 2 weeks in three remote communities in the Northern Territory, I am convinced that the best way to teach children Protective Behaviours is through stories. Fairy Tails and Nursery Rhymes in particular are wonderful as they usually have morals to them but nearly every story has the parental to be a Protective Behaviours lesson. Well except the Very Hungry Caterpillar, you can do obesity but not safety.

Some examples are the Three Billy Goats Gruff had to Risk on Purpose to get to the other side or they would have starved, Humpty Dumpy and Jack and Jill both Risked on Purpose and look what happened to them. Little Red Ridding Hood would have had her Early Warning Signs and should have told someone on her Network.

My tricks, lies, bribes, threats, guilt, blackmail, shame and conning resources works so well with Fairy Tails, as Hansel and Gretel had to trick the witch to push her in the oven. I've used the story of the Ginger Bread Man but changed it to a crocodile puppet and a little boy puppet, in the past with Aboriginal Children, to demonstrate how the crocodile says jump on my tail, then jump up on my back. It's a big long story that ends with the crocodile eating the little boy, but show how the crocodile tricked and lied to the little boy about him being safe. How he didn't listen to his Early Warning Signs or use his Three Safety Questions.

I am proud to announce that I will be publishing my first children's book which will be available in April. My book is called Matilda Learns a Valuable Lesson and is about a young girl who gets her Early Warning Signs. Read more about it next newsletter.
