Roblox Dangers for Kids: What Every Parent Needs to Know

I’m continually surprised by just how many children are still playing Roblox. It has become one of the most popular platforms for young people, yet many parents remain unaware of the potential risks their children may face while using it. In my conversations with parents and educators, I often find that many simply see Roblox as a harmless game and have little understanding of the ways children can interact with others on the platform. This lack of awareness is exactly what prompted me to write this blog. My goal is to help parents better understand the dangers that can exist in online gaming environments like Roblox and equip them with the knowledge they need to keep their children safe.

Children are building worlds, completing challenges, and playing with friends. From the outside, it looks like innocent fun. But here’s what many parents don’t realise.

Roblox is not just a game.

It is a massive online platform where millions of players interact, communicate, and create their own games every day.

And unfortunately, where large numbers of children gather online, predators often follow.

This article explains the real dangers of Roblox for kids, how grooming can happen inside games, and what parents can do to keep their children safe.

Before we begin, let me say this clearly.

The goal is not to scare parents or ban technology.

Technology is part of children’s lives.

Our goal is to educate parents and children so they can recognise unsafe situations and know what to do if something doesn’t feel right.

What Is Roblox? (And Why Kids Love It)

Roblox is one of the most popular gaming platforms in the world, especially among children aged 7–15.

In fact, as of the 3rd of March, there are 1.7 million young Australians aged 6-13 playing Roblox.

And according to statista.com 20% of users are under 9 years, 20% are 9-12 years, 16% are 13-16 years, 25% are 17-24 years, and 19% are 25 years or older.

However, Roblox is not a single game.

It is a platform that hosts millions of games created by users.

Players can:

  • create their own games
  • join games created by others
  • chat with players
  • add friends
  • join groups and communities
  • trade virtual items
  • purchase in-game currency called Robux

While many Roblox games are creative and educational, the platform also allows interaction with people from all over the world.

This means your child may be playing with complete strangers online.

The Biggest Roblox Dangers Parents Should Know

1. Chat Features That Allow Communication With Strangers

One of the biggest risks on Roblox is the chat feature.

Many parents believe their child is simply playing a game.

But Roblox allows players to communicate through:

  • public chat
  • private messages
  • friend requests
  • voice chat (for older players)

Even though Roblox has safety filters and moderation systems, no platform can monitor every conversation perfectly.

This is why predators sometimes use gaming platforms to contact children.

2. Online Grooming Through Games

Online grooming is one of the most serious dangers children face on gaming platforms.

Grooming rarely begins in a frightening way.

It often starts with something that sounds friendly.

A player might say things like:

  • “You’re really good at this game.”
  • “You’re better than most players.”
  • “You seem really mature for your age.”

They may offer help in the game or give virtual items.

At first, it feels like a harmless friendship.

But over time, the person may begin asking questions like:

  • How old are you?
  • Where do you live?
  • Are your parents nearby?

Eventually, they may try to move the conversation to another platform, such as:

  • Discord
  • Snapchat
  • Instagram
  • Whatsapp
  • Telegram

This is a major warning sign.

Moving conversations away from Roblox removes many of the safety protections built into the platform, especially since WhatsApp and Telegram are encrypted, meaning authorities would not be able to locate anyone intending to deceive or harm children.

3. Inappropriate Games Created by Users

Because Roblox allows users to create their own games, the content varies widely.

Some games are fun and creative.

Others contain content that may not be appropriate for children.

Examples include:

  • violent scenarios
  • dating simulations
  • role-play involving adult themes
  • inappropriate language

Many of these games appear harmless at first, but once children enter them, they may encounter situations that are confusing or unsuitable for their age.

4. Roblox Scams and Robux Manipulation

Another growing problem on Roblox is scams involving Robux.

Some players attempt to trick children by promising free Robux or rare items.

They may ask children to:

  • click unsafe links
  • reveal account information
  • share personal details
  • share private images

Children often don’t realise these are scams.

Signs Your Child May Be Experiencing Problems on Roblox

Parents should watch out for behavioural changes that may indicate something’s wrong.

Possible warning signs include:

  • becoming secretive about gaming
  • turning screens away when parents enter
  • closing apps quickly
  • becoming defensive when asked about Roblox
  • receiving gifts from unknown players
  • playing late at night without supervision

These behaviours do not always mean something dangerous is happening.

But they are signals that it may be time to start calm conversations about online safety.

What Parents Can Do to Keep Kids Safe on Roblox

Parents can significantly reduce risks by taking a few practical steps.

Keep Gaming Devices in Shared Spaces

Children should play online games in family areas of the home.

Avoid allowing gaming devices in:

  • bedrooms
  • behind closed doors
  • late at night without supervision

Supervision dramatically reduces online risks.

Learn About the Games Your Child Plays

Ask your child to show you their favourite Roblox game.

Children enjoy sharing their interests, and this helps parents understand what they are experiencing online.

Try asking questions such as:

  • “What do you like about this game?”
  • “Who do you usually play with?”
  • “Do people chat in this game?”

This approach encourages open communication rather than interrogation.

Check Roblox Privacy Settings

Roblox offers safety settings that parents can adjust.

Parents should explore options such as the following:

  • restricting chat features
  • limiting friend requests
  • reviewing friend lists
  • enabling parental controls

These settings can help reduce contact from strangers.

Teach Children Simple Online Safety Rules

Children should understand clear rules when playing online games.

For example:

  • Never share personal information online
  • Never move conversations to another app
  • Never keep online secrets from parents
  • Tell a trusted adult if something feels uncomfortable

The Most Important Protection: Open Communication

Technology controls are helpful, but they are not the most powerful form of protection.

The most powerful protection is communication between parents and children.

Children must feel safe telling parents about things that happen online.

Unfortunately, many children keep their problems secret because they fear their devices will be taken away.

If children believe telling a parent will lead to punishment, they may stay silent.

This is exactly what predators rely on.

Instead of reacting with anger, parents should respond calmly and supportively.

Children need to know the following:

“I can tell my parents if something feels wrong.”

At Safe4Kids, we teach children an important message:

We can talk with someone about anything.

When children believe this, they are far more likely to seek help if they encounter unsafe situations.

Teaching Children to Trust Their Instincts

Another important skill children need is recognising their Early Warning Signs.

These are the feelings in our bodies that tell us something might not be right.

For example:

  • butterflies in the stomach
  • a racing heart
  • feeling nervous or uncomfortable

If children experience these feelings while playing online, they should know they can stop the interaction and tell a trusted adult.

Helping children recognise these signals gives them a powerful internal safety system.

Final Thoughts: Roblox Safety for Parents

Roblox can be creative, social and entertaining for children.

But like many online platforms, it also comes with many risks.

When parents understand the dangers of Roblox for kids, they can guide their children to use the platform safely.

The goal is not to wrap children in cotton wool.

The goal is to equip them with knowledge, confidence and communication skills.

These are the tools that protect children not only online but also throughout their lives.

Here is a link to my Cyber Safety Agreement that you can work through with your children, which states that the agreement is for all technology, whether it is in your home or anywhere else.
